Pillaton WI Report - March 2012

Sixty five years of friendship, laughter and pleasure are celebrated by Pillaton WI this year, so the Annual Meeting in March was a good time for reflection on the past and looking forward to the present.

Our usual business meeting preceded the Annual Meeting, giving members the opportunity to sign up for the Group Meeting to be hosted by Pillaton on 26 April, as well as reminding everybody about our 65th Birthday Party on 24 March, Pillaton Gardening Club’s Spring Show on 31 March and highlighting the county organised photography day on 29 June. President Liz Llewellyn Jones also gave us a sneak preview of the interesting programme of speakers lined up for the year 2012-2013, just to whet our appetites!

The Annual Meeting followed, with Treasurer Sue Archer presenting the Financial Statement for the year ended December 2011.

In her Annual Report, outgoing Secretary Pam Lowther outlined our highly successful past year, citing 60% attendance at meetings, and focussing on the coach trip to St Austell Brewery, our Birthday and Christmas parties, the collections organised for the charity Operation Sunshine and the Carol Singing around the village – all reflecting the value of Pillaton WI within both the local and wider community.

We patted ourselves on the back remembering our successful team entry into the Festival of the Spoken Word, which Pillaton has now won twice! Although membership numbers have dropped slightly this year, we still have a thriving group numbering 35.

In her address, President Liz Llewellyn Jones thanked the committee for their hard work and dedication during the past year. Retiring committee members were singled out for their specific contributions and the new committee welcomed. No elections were needed as there were only enough nominations to fill the vacant positions. Liz emphasised what a fantastic past year we have enjoyed and expressed her hope that the coming year will be every bit as enjoyable. At the time of writing, the key role of Secretary to Pillaton WI remains vacant. This role must be filled to enable Pillaton WI to continue, so every effort is being made to persuade a committee member to take it on.

The meeting ended with a soundly applauded repeat performance by our Festival of the Spoken Word team. Then it was “Chiefly Ourselves” as we all had a go at choral speaking under Liz’s direction. An enjoyable way to round off the evening.

(Pillaton WI is a friendly group and welcomes new members. Come along and meet us! If you would like to know more about Pillaton WI, please contact me on 351289.)
