Christmas Tree Festival - 7th to 31st December 2016

Pillaton's first Christmas Tree Festival opened on 7th December, to coincide with the Nine Lessons and Carols service in the church, and continues until the end of December. See Christmas Tree Festival for details of 'Lighting Up' times and links to photographs of many of the trees.


TVHPPG Notice About Health Care Changes - 4th December 2016

Tamar Valley Health Patients Group has just provided notice that major changes to the delivery of health and social services by the National Health Service are being proposed for Cornwall. To find out more about these changes and to provide input via a survey, see TVHPPG News.

Skittles League Update - 3rd December 2016

Pillaton Skittles League Game

The first two months of this season's skittles league matches have been completed. Currently the Knackered Monks are in first place from the Dare Devils but have played an extra two matches. Latest scores and fixtures can be found in the Skittles section of the Activities page.

Note that as a result of the hall closure in January (see item below), the matches originally scheduled for January 2017 will be played on 2nd/4th February.


Village Hall Temporary Closure - 3rd December 2016

Plans to fit a new floor in the Village Hall have been put back a month. The hall will now be closed from 3rd January 2017 for the rest of the month.

Howton Solar Farm Community Fund - 13th November 2016

The latest report about the above fund has been received. Since its origins a few years ago, approximately £70,000 of grants have been distributed to various community groups in the surrounding area. The Souper Village Showcase Day was held on Saturday, 12th November. It gave people a chance to find out about the various groups that are active in the village and to enjoy a soup and pud provided by our star chef, Shirley. See Showcase Day for a selection of images taken on the day.

Cherry Feast - 10th July 2016

Despite strong competition from national sporting events being shown on TV (Andy Murray on the way to his second Wimbledon Men's Championship and Lewis Hamilton winning his fourth British Grand Prix at Silverstone) and other local events, people still turned up in large numbers to enjoy the annual Cherry Feast. Neil and Clare from Briars Mede have done an excellent job recently of cleaning up, repairing and repainting the local library. Clare is also looking for more kids books to go in the library. Further details can be found on the Pillaton's Library page.


Flowers for the Queen - 17th June 2016

Part of Pillaton's commemoration of our Queen's 90th birthday was the "90 Years in Bloom" display held in the church on the 11th and 12th of June. Alison Downing instigated and organised this with the assistance other villagers and the end result was spectacular. Fortunately Les Wyatt was able to get along with his camera to record this and his images can be seen on the Flowers for the Queen gallery page.

[Update: 21 July 2016] There is also a video (just over 3 minutes long) taken by Tony Rowe that can be seen at Pillaton Flower Festival on YouTube.

Choose Well Bulletin - 26th May 2016

With the late Spring Bank Holiday looming, we have received the following sound advice from the Cornwall Gateway Community Link Officer should you suffer from an injury:

"Don’t spend your bank holiday waiting in the emergency department to get sprains, strains and broken bones fixed - head straight for your nearest Minor Injury Unit (MIU)."

There are MIUs scattered throughout Cornwall but the closest ones to us in the village are St. Barnabas (Saltash) and Liskeard.

Notice of the Third 'Festival in the Field' - 23rd May 2016

The third St. Mellion 'Festival in the Field' will take place on 18th June 2016 between 2.00 pm. and 10.00 pm. on the St Mellion School playing field. The event aims to be family friendly with children of all ages welcome. Music will be provided by local bands. For full details, see the event website.

Fundraising Clay Pigeon Shoot - 17 April 2016

The Pillaton WW1 Commemoration Group organised a Clay Pigeon Shoot at Bush Farm to help with fundraising for the purchase of the village's playing fields (see Playing Field Fund Raising Appeal for more details).

A great day was had by all and lots of money raised for the charity. Images from the day sent in by Tanya Taylor can be seen on the Fundraising Clay Pigeon Shoot gallery page.

Another Shoot is planned for October so keep an eye on the Diary page if you are interested.


Pillaton Arts And Crafts Exhibition - 16/17 April 2016

The Pillaton Arts and Crafts Group Exhibition, ably organised by Jo and Don King, was held over the weekend of 16/17 April and was deemed a great success. An idea of the wide variety of skills and media employed by the very talented villagers can be seen on the Pillaton Arts and Crafts Exhibition gallery page.

Search For School Governors - 3rd April 2016

The St Dominic and St Mellion School Federation is currently undertaking a search for new Governors to join its governing body. An introductory letter from the Rev. Chris Painter and a poster give more information.

National Grid Line Refurbishment Works - 23rd March 2016

An email has been received from the National Grid advising of temporary road closures and disruption in connection with work being undertaken to refurbish the overhead power line in this area. See National Grid Line Refurbishment Works for more about this.

Council Tax Scam - 16th March 2016

We have received an email from Cornwall Council advising us of a scam and requesting that this information be passed on to people in this area.

"I have been advised that company is phoning local individuals claiming to be able to rerate your property to achieve reductions in council tax and tax banding. They require your credit card and £65 payment up front. I can confirm that we have checked this with Cornwall Council and Trading Standards and that this is a scam."

With just the final games to be played on 10th and 12th March, there are three teams in close contention for the title. The Dare Devils have a two point lead over the Knackered Monks whilst the Hill Billies are ten points further adrift but have extra games in hand. It could all be decided on the final skittle! December Rainfall - 1st January 2016

Unlike those unfortunate people in Cumbria, Yorkshire and Lancashire who suffered heavy and prolonged rainfall with subsequent severe flooding, our rainfall for December was about average at 169.5mm. (6.65"). The total for 2015 in Pillaton was also in the average band with 1,255mm. (49.41"). See Rainfall Figures for details.


Advance Notices of Several Events - 1st January 2016

With the new year barely under way, we have already received notice of several events to be held in the course of the year.

Firstly, Tony Rowe has circulated details of a forthcoming Supper and Concert to be held in the Village Hall and Church on 19th February 2016. See Grand Charity Supper & Concert for Tony's announcement.

Secondly, Ann Henderson has provided details of planned Village Hall Social Events and a notice about the Annual Meeting (APCM).
