Another Photo from Pillaton's Past - 21st April 2014

Dave Joslin has sent us another photograph from the 1950s. This time it is of the pupils at St Mellion County Primary School and probably dates from around 1957. Following the closure of Pillaton's school in the early 1950s, the one in St Mellion became the nearest and logical choice for children from the village to attend, and has continued thus to this day.

See if you recognise the children or the names on the St Mellion School Photo (ca 1957) page.

Old Photos of Pillaton - 23rd March 2014

Many thanks to Dave Joslin, former village resident during the 1950s, who has emailed in two photographs taken in that period. One is of High Kernock as it was when he started living there. The other was taken at the Coronation cricket match between the women and the men of the village (1953). He comments:

"One of my activities was the scorer for the cricket team and Roy Warne was the wicket keeper. . . . the photos may jog some memories as I have a job to identify those in the 1953 Coronation cricket match. My mother was one of the women and the only ones I can recognise now are Laurence Pearce, Don Irwin and Roy Warne."

If anyone can identify any of the faces in the photo (click on the thumbnail image above for a larger version), could they please get in touch and let us know using the contact link at the bottom of the page.

You can see both photos in the Gallery section Days Gone By

The Merry Bellringers - March 2014

At the recent Pillaton ringers' AGM, held in the Weary Friar, Richard Warwick (the Tower Captain) appended to his report an item relating to an incident involving bell ringers here nearly 200 years ago. Although treated seriously at the time, from this distance it is easy to see the funny side of things. See The Merry Bell-Ringers for a snapshot of life in 1819.

Letters from EnZed - March 2014

Another installment from our correspondent in New Zealand.

Unfortunately, because of a mix up with emails, this did not reach Robin in time for inclusion in the recent Pillaton Village News so can be seen in the link below.

We have received notice as follows from Richard about bell ringing on Saturday at St Odulphus.

On Saturday the 8th of February a visiting band of ringers will be attempting a full peal of Belfast Surprise Major on Pillaton bells. This will commence at 10 am. and, if successful, will last for about three hours. Belfast is one of the most difficult methods, requiring uninterrupted concentration, and so please do not disturb the ringers.

Richard Warwick (who will not be ringing himself - much too difficult for me!)

January Rainfall - 2nd February 2014

As if December wasn't wet enough, we had even more rain in January with over 11" recorded. As a result, January quickly supplanted December as the wettest single month we have had in the past three years or so, with 283mm (11.14") of rain. Fortunately, in the main, we have not had local flooding as has been seen in Somerset and other parts of the UK. See the latest rainfall figures for more detail.

Cycle way linking Callington with Carkeel - 16th January 2014

We have received the following item of interest from the St Mellion Parish Council.

Over the last few months, St Mellion PC has been discussing a formal cycle route to link Callington (and Gunnislake beyond) with Carkeel (and/or the proposed development at Broadmoor Farm). Cllr. Steve Crook has produced a draft proposal which the PC intends to send to Sustrans at Cornwall Council for their views. Before we do this, however, we'd appreciate the input of adjacent areas.

The plans can be viewed at the following link but be warned it is a largish file (ca 4.5Mb). Cycle way linking Callington with Carkeel

If you have any comments about the plans, please contact the St. Mellion Parish Council

Someone in the Liskeard and Callington area has been stealing large items such as propane gas bottles and field gates.

December Rainfall - 12th January 2014

Rain on the window

December turned out to be the wettest for the last three years (ie. since rainfall records have been kept by Brian Hutfield). Fortunately it was not enough to make 2013 wetter than 2012 although at times it seemed to be trying hard. It ended up by being the wettest single month we have had over that three year span with 261mm (over 10.25") of rain. See the latest rainfall figures for more detail.
