Wind Turbine Plans - 22nd December 2012

Bell Ringing over Christmas and the New Year

Pillaton bells after refitting

Normally the eight bells of Pillaton church are only rung for services on a couple of Sundays each month and for practices on Tuesday evenings. However, over the festive season there will be some extra ringing that I thought the villagers should be informed about in advance.

Midnight Mass will be held at Pillaton on Christmas Eve this year, and we will be ringing before the service from 11 to 11.30 pm. Also, on New Year’s Eve we have a tradition of ringing out the old year mournfully on muffled bells before midnight and ringing in the new year joyfully on open bells after midnight, so the bells will be ringing from around 11.30 pm until around 00.15 am, with a short break before midnight while we risk our necks taking the muffles off. For the latter event we usually get some welcome spectators.

In addition to this, a visiting band of ringers will be attempting a full peal of Steadman Triples on the bells on Friday 28th December, starting at 2.30 pm. This will involve ringing all possible combinations of changes on the front seven bells (5,040) with the tenor bell ringing behind and, if successful, will take almost three hours.

November Parish Council Meeting

The minutes for the November meeting of the Pillaton Parish Council are now available. At this meeting the Council agreed to support the objection to the proposed wind turbine at Quethiock and commented it had no control over the fence and gates put in place restricting access to the river near Clapper Bridge.

The Council meeting minutes are published on this website and older ones can be accessed from the Council page.

November Rainfall - 2nd December 2012

Rain drops on a window

I am sure it will come as no surprise that November was a wet month here in Pillaton. It may also not be much of a surprise to learn that with 255mm. (or 10") it was the wettest month here since Brian Hutfield started recording his rainfall figures two years ago.

What may surprise you though is the combined weight of those raindrops. Brian did some calculations and came up with a figure that 1" of rain over an area of 1 acre is equivalent to 101 tons of water. So, during November, every acre of land here was subjected to just over 1000 tons of rainwater. It is a wonder we did not sink under the weight!

Wind Turbine Plans - 26th November 2012

Wind turbine in the countryside

There are plans to install a large wind turbine on Beacon Hill near Dennett. Although this is not in the parish of Pillaton it will be visible to many houses here and could open the way for the installation of other wind turbines in the area.

To find out more about the benefits and the drawbacks see the Beacon Hill wind turbine page.

A Royal Thank You - 4th November 2012

Thank You letter from Balmoral to Pillaton

Do you remember the Queen's DIamond Jubilee Celebrations in June and the competition to design an Anniversary card? After the judging, Pam Lowther sent the winning entries to Her Majesty and has now received a Thank You letter from Balmoral Castle.

A Wonderful Gift to Pillaton Church - 1st November 2012

We are so blessed in our community by the kind hearted and generous people who live in our midst. I have always been embarrassed by the fact that our vicar and any supporting clergy have had to sit on really hard seats scantily covered by, frankly, scruffy pieces of material.

I mentioned this to Ann Barnicoat a couple of weeks ago and, in the twinkling of an eye, she has produced two sumptuous cushions which would be the envy of any place of worship in the country. They have been completed and have been donated as a gift from Ann to the church.

October Rainfall - 1st November 2012

Rain drops on a window

Unless you are one of those fortunates who have spent much of the year abroad, you cannot have failed to realise that this year has been a touch moister than usual. Brian Hutfield's latest rainfall figures show that by the end of October we had already beaten last year's total. The rain and hail that we are having as I write this indicate that November and December are not going to suddenly change to dry and sunny either!

Formation of a Youth Council - 17th October 2012

Pillaton Parish Council wish to support the formation of a YOUTH COUNCIL. The purpose of the Youth Council would be to enable the YOUTH of the Parish to have their voice in the affairs and plans of the Village. The Council would meet every three months together with a Parish Councillor to express their views.

If you are over 14 years of age and are interested in such a commitment then please apply in writing to Mr D. Dolley or telephone Mr Dolley on 350159.

Wall and Loft Insulation Offer - 15th September 2012

Wadebridge Renewable Energy Network (WREN) is running a CERT scheme. This basically means that people have access to free loft insulation and free cavity wall insulation. We have been advised this is not determined by income and is therefore open to everyone.

This scheme was initially targeted with Wadebridge but is now being opened up across the county. The deadline is really tight as the installation of the insulation needs to be completed by 5th November in order to qualify.

See the Notice Boards for more information and contact details.

Churchyard Project - 11th September 2012

A great start has been made in the churchyard at Pillaton ahead of the Young Farmers from Callington coming later in the month to fence the new area. (See Pillaton Churchyard Extension for background to project.)

Four trainees from Stuart Renfree's training course and an instructor assisted Ian Edwards and myself this afternoon to prepare for the new fence, taking out wild trees and the existing fence.

The trainees are planning to return at 1000 on Thursday (13th September) to continue the good work and if anyone else could come to assist, it would be much appreciated.

First Peal on Eight Bells - 21st July 2012

Pillaton bells after refitting

Following the refurbishment and augmentation of the bells in St. Odulphus in 2009, the bells have been used many times, but only now have they been used for a full peal. To find out what this is and who was involved, read about the First Peal on the New Eight Bells at Pillaton.

Parish Council Matters - 20th July 2012

The Parish Council has issued two notices that parishioners should be aware of:

Missing Cat Now Found - 8th July 2012

Mozart, the missing black and white cat, was found a few days ago somewhat thinner and decidedly wet! Christine, the owner, would like to thank everyone for their help in getting him back home.

June Rainfall - 8th July 2012

You probably don't need reminding that June was a trifle damp this year (and July looks set to match it)! We had a record month for rain in June 2012. See Brian Hutfield's rainfall figures.

First Aid Training Offer- 30th June 2012

The Pillaton Playground Project has funds available to run a First Aid Training session in the Village Hall at a date to be arranged. If you are interested, further details can be found on the First Aid Training poster.

Missing Cat - 30th June 2012

A black and white cat has gone missing in the area. If you have any information the owner would like to hear from you. Further details on this Lost Cat poster.

3 Peaks Challenge - 16th and 17th June 2012

Some of us find it a challenge to walk up the gentle slope through the village leading to the Church and The Weary Friar! See what Karen Edwards went through recently when she undertook the 3 Peaks Challenge and raised more than £1000 for charity. A splendid achievement.

Bells Restoration Project Funding- 17th June 2012

Continued misunderstanding about funding the 2009 project to refurbish and augment the tower bells at Pillaton's church has provoked this statement from the Ringers setting the record straight.

Celebrations for the Queen's Jubilee - 2nd to 4th June 2012

Diamond Jubilee Logo

What a weekend! In spite of some uncooperative weather, all the events went ahead much as planned and were very well attended. All those who helped in the organisation of the events and activities deserve a very big THANK YOU from the rest of the village. It is perhaps unfair to pick out names, as so many people did so much, but Julie M'hand, Sue White and Dave Dolley deserve a special mention for all their dedication and hard work.

We were very fortunate to have our local MP, Sheryll Murray, come along on Monday to officially open the Village Hall 'Garden' and Playing Field Improvements and to unveil the magnificent new Pillaton mural by David Whittley.

See Pillaton Celebrates the Queen's Diamond Jubilee for a report and photographs covering the weekend events here in the village.

Sweat Shop Discovered in Pillaton! - 10th May 2012

Pillaton's Sew-In

Blood (from the occasional pricked finger), Sweat (it got very hot) and Tears (mostly of laughter) were in evidence at the bunting sew-in on Thursday. Pennants of red, white and blue fluttered around the room as busy fingers cut, stitched, threaded and glued. The occasional curse (ladylike of course!) was heard as machines sewed crookedly or scissors cut off the wrong bit, but mostly it was chat and good fun.

These Sew-In photographs mark the occasion.

The results of this marathon Sew-In will be seen adorning Pillaton on Jubilee weekend.

Dog Owners Please Note - 9th May 2012

A Neighbourhood Watch message regarding some problems with dogs in the area. Please be aware of your responsibilities as a dog owner.

Duck Race and Car Boot Sale - 7th May 2012

Pillaton Duck Race Prizes

Further heavy rain over Sunday night forced the decision, on safety grounds, to decamp the Duck Race & Car Boot Sale to the Village Hall. However, in true British Bank Holiday style, car booters set up in the hall and a host of potential buyers and duck racers turned up. The afternoon stayed dry with the occasional burst of sunshine and Helen's ice cream cornets did such a good trade she had to send home for more!

Dave oversaw the Duck Draw and the first prize of £100 was won by a delighted Richard Lowther. The final prize, the only duck on show that day, was won by Val Tucker!

Many thanks to all the organisers for their hard work, notably Sue, Dave and Ian, and to all who supported the event.

As well as the regular monthly WI meeting, which in April saw the ladies being taken for a Holiday in Antarctica, there was an extra meeting in which Pillaton WI played host to the Blunts' Group of WI's.

April Rainfall - 1st May 2012

A very wet April has helped restore the average for this year so far to much the same as last year's overall average. Some parts of the UK seem to have had the wettest April for a 100 years . . . and they are still in a drought situation! See Brian Hutfield's rainfall figures for Pillaton.

Superfast Broadband is Here - 19th April 2012

Posters have appeared around the village proclaiming that you can now upgrade to Superfast Broadband with download speeds of up to 40Mbps.

For more information and first impressions, see our Superfast Broadband page.

Ringing News - 12th April 2012

Handbell ringers

Some recent bell ringing news, both handbells and tower bells. Also contact details for more information, especially if you would like to join in either or both activities. New starters are very welcome.

March Rainfall - 3rd April 2012

Only 26mm of rain in March, that is 1 inch in 'old money'. Not much rain either way! The water level in the River Lynher is now very low so it looks as though we may be heading towards a drought situation like other parts of the UK. You can see how little we are getting from Brian Hutfield's latest rainfall figures.

Refuse Collection Day Changed - 3rd April 2012

Dustbin gif image

The weekly refuse collection day has been changed again and is now on Tuesdays instead of Wednesdays, with effect from 3rd April 2012. You are advised to have your refuse placed at the collection point by 7.30 am. on Tuesdays. Further details and dates for Recycling and Garden Waste collections can be found on the Amenities page.

The next progress meeting will be held on April 13th in the Village Hall.

Rainfall Last Month - 5th March 2012

Although we are not suffering the very dry conditions that are affecting parts of eastern England, February was not a wet month down here. As you can see from Brian Hutfield's rainfall figures, we had much less rain than January this year, or February last year.

Dell Laptop Charging Problem - 19th February 2012

Further to the broadband item last October, the Superfast Cornwall website now states for St. Dominick exchange (the one which serves Pillaton's telephones) that "Superfast broadband will start to become available in your area by March 2012".

Rain, Rain and More Rain - January 2012

Rain drops on a window

No, it is usually not that bad, although we sometimes get periods when a dry spell would be very welcome. To pour some light on this (is that a mixed metaphore?), Brian Hutfield has kindly sent in his rainfall figures for Pillaton taken in his garden over the past year. As 2012 progresses, we hope to add in the latest monthly rainfall figures and can then compare them with those for last year. Perhaps it will give us an early warning of when we need to build that ark!

Eden Project Offer for Local Residents - January 2012
