Pillaton Handbell Ringers - December 2011

The Pillaton Handbell Ringers rung a selection of Christmas music to a very appreciative audience in the Great Hall at Cotehele House in December. The setting was magical, with the traditional garland of dried flowers dominating the Hall and a log fire blazing in the huge Tudor fireplace. The group has had another successful year, ringing at music festivals and rallies throughout the region and entertaining the residents of local care homes, as well as enjoying our weekly practices and get-togethers. We are now looking forward to competing at Saltash Music Festival in January and attempting to retain our trophy from the Cornish Music Festival in Truro in March.

Operation Sunshine Collection - 12th November 2011

The members of Pillaton WI would like to say thank you so much to all who contributed to the Operation Sunshine collection. We had a good turnout, which resulted in three Land Rovers and a huge great trailer all filled to the brim. Our drivers this time were Ruth and Greg Terrell, who did two journeys, and Jenny and David Shawcross. So a big thanks to them for their time and resources. We raised enough funds to cover the cost of the village hall and to have a few pounds left over to donate to Operation Sunshine. Ann in Tavistock was absolutely delighted and sends her sincere thanks to all involved.

We hope to repeat this exercise in the spring so please remember to put things aside if you do any clearing out.

Thanks again.

Superfast Broadband, the Current Situation - 31st October 2011

In June there was an earlier item about the high speed broadband implementation that has started across Cornwall. Updates on the official Superfast Cornwall website indicate that we in Pillaton (on the St. Dominick exchange) could have fast broadband connectivity by the end of 2012. Currently there is no more specific date than this and it looks as though the rumours that we may be connected to the Callington exchange and have the service earlier are unfounded.

Users on Callington, Gunnislake, Liskeard and Saltash exchanges (Saltash is actually a separate project) should all have high speed broadband available by December this year.

To benefit from the faster line, you will need to change your broadband account and possibly your Internet Service Provider. Prices at present start from £20 per month. For the latest details on this and other related items, take a look at the Superfast Cornwallwebsite. You will also find there a 'Superfast broadband line checker' facility which can be used to obtain the latest situation for your specific telephone number.

Website Anniversary - 8th September 2011

Anniversary Cake

The 8th September marks the first anniversary of the launch of this website so a big thank you to all the contributors and visitors over the past year who have helped make it a success.

During October 2010, the first full month in service, we had 127 visits spread across 58 different users who downloaded 578 pages. Since then there has been a gradual increase in activity with our busiest month being July 2011 when there were a total of 410 visits from 245 different users who downloaded 1530 pages.

Amongst those who contacted us by email after visiting the site were two separate users from Australia, both tracing family histories from the parish.

Whilst on the topic of history, does anyone have any old (or even not so old) photographs of Pillaton and the area that we could put on the website? If you have any such images we could borrow to copy, please let us know. Either get in touch using the link at the bottom of any page or call on 351662. We'd really like to add some old images of the area to the website for others to enjoy.

Superfast Cornwall - 16th June 2011

Most of you will have no doubt seen the BT Openreach engineers carrying out cable installation work in the area during recent weeks. The fibre optic cable they are laying is an essential part of the Superfast Cornwall project that will bring much improved internet broadband speed to Cornwall.

Official details are available from the above site where plans show that Callington is due to have the new service by March 2012 whilst St. Dominick, where Pillaton telephone lines are currently routed, is in the batch for 2013. However, villagers who have spoken to the installation engineers have been told (unofficially of course) that the connections could be up and running in a few months and that Pillaton will be connected to Callington.

We will keep you updated with further information when available. If anyone can provide more official details, please get in touch.
